Good news!
Tuseday’s Commerce and Consumer Protection Committee hearing at the Capitol on SF 1943: Prohibiting pet shops from selling cats and dogs, was approved to move ahead to the Judiciary Committee.
We’re deeply grateful to Senator Dibble, Aaron Zellhoefer with Humane World for Animals, and Danielle, who provided powerful testimony, for representing this bill well!
As previously mentioned, this bill isn’t our most ideal scenario as it allows the existing pet stores to continue selling puppies, but it’s a great preventative measure so new puppy-selling pet stores cannot open. This bill also brings more transparency to the public as to where the puppies are coming from and any violations the breeder may have. As we’ve seen over the years, the USDA has low standards of care for animals and they have failed, more than once, to serve appropriate violations and protect dogs, but we will work with what we have and continue to fight for the animals.
